An Interview with Simon Mole – “I love the people here, it is a really supportive and friendly firm”
It could be said that joining a new firm, particularly in the summer, is a good time for a corporate lawyer to arrive and settle in. Usually, the holiday season means that activity slows a little with clients and other advisors taking a break.
We sat down with our new associate solicitor Simon Mole in the Plymouth office, to find out how he is settling into life at Kitson Boyce and ask his impressions of the firm from when he thought about joining to today, now he’s been here a little while.
So Simon, did you get a chance to get your feet under your new desk and ease into things? “Not exactly!” He replied with a bit of laughter. “I knew the firm’s reputation for corporate deals made it one of the leaders in the region. I got a very warm welcome from colleagues but then quickly immersed myself in helping them get a few deals over the line. A fast start, but a good way to see how we do things here and work closely with colleagues who are corporate, commercial property, and employment specialists.”
With over 13 years of experience in corporate, commercial property, agricultural and renewable energy experience in Devon and Cornwall, he has worked with local companies enabling them to realise succession plans and get their rewards for their investments.
What attracted you to Kitson Boyce? “I knew the firm had recently merged and brought together some really good people so I thought I’d get in touch and find out whether there was an opportunity for me.”
At that time, Simon didn’t know that Kitson Boyce was about to win “Law Firm of the Year” at the 2024 Devon & Somerset Law Society Awards. Did you know something Simon? “As I said, I knew it was a good fit and it was great to see it officially recognised.” He said in modest fashion.
Rhodri Davey, managing partner at Kitson Boyce, picked up the story from the opposite side, “We always say we welcome conversations with people who share our people first approach so it was great to hear from Simon who clearly spotted the potential of our merger.” He continued, “We knew him from working on the other side of corporate transactions and felt that he’d be a really good cultural fit and add further experience to our business law team.”
Simon really got the chance to find out more about Kitson Boyce at the firm’s AGM which was held at the Exeter Golf & Country Club on 13th September.
How did you find it? “It was fantastic! A real opportunity for me to find out more about our growth ambitions, our new brand in action, and have the chance to co-create our core values which shows how much the firm both listens and trusts its people.” He added, “Socially it was great to see everyone come together and I have to say that the ‘Race Around Exeter’ challenge in the afternoon was unique as a team building exercise which brought out some real competitive spirit and was great fun!”
Now you’ve really had the chance to settle in, what are your thoughts? “I love the people, it is a really supportive and friendly firm. There’s a real open door approach here and it has been great to be part of it from day one,” he explained.
Very importantly, we take it you’ve had a chance to take a break with your young family after such a busy start? “Yes, I did managed to get in a few camping trips away with the family despite the rather wet summer and I am now looking forward to spending time with them over the festive period.”
