Wills & Estate Planning

Life can be hectic and estate planning is often a long way down your list of priorities, after family, work and general day to day life.

However, a will is one of the most important documents you will ever sign and it is paramount that you put one in place at the right time in your life. Our estate planning lawyers appreciate this and aim to make the whole process of will writing and/or editing as easy as possible by providing you with clear and expert legal guidance.

Having an up-to-date will in place allows you to choose who you want to manage your estate and carry out your wishes (Executors), whether any particular personal items or cash lump sums should go to specific individuals, and who you want to receive the bulk of your estate. Our will lawyers will talk you through all of these aspects, ensuring that your priorities are put first when you write a will.

Estate planning is crucial for a number of reasons, including:

  • If you have children under the age of 18, you can appoint guardians in your will to look after those children in the event that you and the father/mother of those children both die before your children reach 18.
  • If you don’t have an up-to-date will in place then your assets could end up going to beneficiaries whom you no longer wish to benefit.
  • If you don’t have a will at all then your assets could pass to distant relatives or even to the Crown. You may also miss out on tax reliefs that would benefit your estate, particularly if you are married or own a business or agricultural assets.

Our will and estate planning team will make sure that your will is tailored to your particular circumstances without being any more complicated than it needs to be. We will be upfront with you about how much it will cost to write a will and how long it will take.

The wills and estate planning team are able to offer transparent legal advice across Devon and can be reached via our Torquay, Plymouth, Exeter and Totnes offices. They have years of combined experience assisting with will writing and related matters and can also advise on a complete range of related Private Client law matters.
